Hellblazer original sins6/4/2023 This is not a series that shies away from tough subjects either: the Thatcher politics in the late 80’s, the horrors of the Vietnam war, and AIDS. He will screw his friends to save a thousand people, and he will screw a thousand people to save his own neck. Constantine is a gambler and a con-man, meaning he knows more often than not that he is risking everything on blind luck. This isn’t a superhero thriller where he saves the world and gets the girl. What I really like about this series is how grounded it is. It all starts when he meets a girl named Zed when Constantine’s niece is kidnapped. Hellblazer: Original Sins is a collection of loosely connected stories, and early on seeds are planted for Constantine to investigate the Resurrection Crusaders and the Damnation Army. What happened at Newcastle? And, while we do learn a little about that here, that’s not this story. Part of what makes him such an interesting character is not the magic (or rather lack thereof,) or the demons he fights, but his mysterious backstory. Gets us into the mood and what better comic to read for Halloween than Hellblazer? Hellblazer: Original Sins collects the first 9 issues and shows us John Constantine in his early days, but this isn’t an origin story. It’s that time of year where we want to be scared. Halloween is the perfect time of year to dive into your favourite horror films or books. Letterers: Annie Halfacree, Todd Klein, & John Costanza

The heptameron6/4/2023 Little may be gained by expending effort trying to track down whether these characters were in the story actually were involved in any events bearing a similarity to the events in the tale, however, as-like in this one-the names were discreetly changed protect the innocent as well as, doubtlessly, the guilty.Ī Nasty Adventure which befel Madam De Roncex at the Franciscan Monastery of Thouars. “Her secret was revealed, as you shall find from her story, in which I will state nothing but what is true, except the names of the persons and the places, which I will change." Geburon, narrator of Novel XLIIIĪnother recurrence in the introduction of the tales, such as the one that Geburon, another narrator, is about to relate, is that in addition to being true, the stories feature real life personages known to Marguerite. It is one of the conceits of the constructive fiction by Margurite of Navarre that the stories contained in the Heptameron are all true. In fact, most of the tales-or a great many at any rate-are preceded by such an establishment. The narrator of the tenth tale in this collection is Parlamente and the tale is preceded by this call to truth. “Everything, then, which I am about to tell you is true, except the names, the places, and the country.” Parlamente, Narrator of Novel X We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own. Strip Tease by Carl Hiaasen6/3/2023 Hiaasen runs up a string of outlandish coincidences and creates a series of brilliant portrayed, absolutely bizarre and often likeable characters. When Dilbeck makes the ill-advised election year decision to become involved in a drunken brawl in the Eager Beaver strip joint where Erin Grant works, the opportunities for blackmail become obvious and the workload for sleazy political fixers such as Malcolm Moldowsky becomes more than even his expertise can handle. Strip Tease is a somewhat kinky, entirely off-the-wall, but thoroughly entertaining tale of murder, blackmail and political intrigue that revolves around Erin Grant, a stripper who toils nightly to raise the money for the legal tab she's running up in a custody battle for her daughter, and David Dilbeck, a thoroughly corrupt and entirely imbecilic US congressman whose thought processes rarely stray beyond hormones and never get above the level of what's between his legs (or whose legs he's between). You'll also understand what I mean when I suggest that Carl Hiaasen is to fiction and mystery novels as Bill Bryson is to travel literature. If you've ever read a travelogue by Bill Bryson then you'll know what I mean when I say it's possible to be hilarious and entirely serious at the same time.

Interestingly, the Yale historian explains that his book is not about modern China. He says, quite rightly, that “in trying to understand China today we need to know about China in the past.” That is why Spence begins his narrative in the late 16th Century, when China was ruled by its last native dynasty on the eve of the Manchu conquest. Spence in “The Search for Modern China” endeavors to facilitate an understanding of China. Even Deng Xiaoping has said that one has to go back to the Ming Dynasty, to the time when the 15th-Century explorer Zheng He went on expeditions to the western oceans, to discover a time when China did not practice a closed-door policy. This obsession with secrecy, this passion to prevent foreigners from finding out what China is really like, accounts to some extent for the myths and mystique surrounding China. When an English merchant, James Flint, presented a petition levying charges against the superintendent of customs, the emperor, after verifying the allegations, dismissed the official, sentenced Flint to three years of exile in Macao for having violated protocol, and had the Sichuanese who helped him prepare the Chinese-language petition publicly beheaded. The Chinese Empire in those days went to great lengths to keep even its language a secret from foreigners.

Queen of shadows throne of glass 46/3/2023 I for one absolutely loved it-as you can tell by my star rating above-for many reasons. A major change to the tone and the overall feel of these books was evident, and whether or not that’s a good thing really depends on who you ask within the Throne of Glass fandom. It was obvious-even back during Heir of Fire-that the series had taken a massive shift. Queen Of Shadows is a particularly interesting part of the series because of a few reasons. We’ve also met plenty of memorable characters along the way too some that will be major players for the battle ahead! We’ve gotten to know her as a character, see her bloody past and her mistakes, and to see her grow before our eyes as readers. To see my Fancast/Dreamcast for the whole series – Click HERE Total Star Rating: 4.5 Starsīy now, we’re so far into the series and even further into the evolution that was Celaena Sardothien into Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, the long lost heir of Terrassen. Birdie and Me by J.M.M. Nuanez6/2/2023 It also addresses bullying, regrets, and mental health. This is a story that addresses a wide variety of family dynamics, including questions about transgender behaviors and feelings. But sometimes it's important to peel back the emotional "onion layers" and see more than what's visible on the surface. They know practically nothing about Patrick, except how gruff he seems. But one day his ability to properly care for them is questioned and so they're eventually sent to live with their Uncle Patrick. After their mother dies they are sent to live with their Uncle Carl, who loves them deeply. And this is particularly the case since Birdie tends to be bullied due to his creative, colorful clothing. Jack is the mature older sister always seeking to protect her little brother. This tenderhearted story is of Jack and Birdie, two siblings who recently lost their mother.

Books by jason rekulak6/2/2023 Mallory had a bright future ahead of her until personal tragedy struck and she instead went down the line of strong painkillers eventually becoming addicted to stronger drugs until finally seeking help at rehab. It’s brilliantly twisted in a way that I didn’t expect and I feel like Rekulak just literally led me down the garden path with his cunning and devious plot.Īs the story begins we meet Mallory Quinn. Within barely a few pages I found myself hooked and a few chapters down the line I couldn’t put this one down. Well, I picked up Hidden Pictures without virtually any knowledge aforethought and I had a slight feeling of ‘is this going to be a bit gimmicky’ given the angle with the pictures, etc – I soon found out that wasn’t going to be the case and the pictures in fact added a sinister note as the images they depicted became steadily more shocking. My Five Word TL:DR Review : Didn’t foresee that twisted ending
